  1. Q:  I‚Äôm wondering if you could start by describing 
  2. what influence McLuhan has had on your life?

  4. A:  None, directly that I know of. In other words, 
  5. when Marshall McLuhan first published 
  6. Understanding Media  in 1964, I didn‚Äôt understand 
  7. it‚Äîand at the time I saw him as he was presented 
  8. by the American media, as a pop guru and a wise 
  9. man in the manner of Buckminster Fuller, a figure 
  10. of the age, a great sage of the North and so forth. 
  11. I didn‚Äôt really read Understanding Media  until this 
  12. spring when I was asked to write an introduction 
  13. to the MIT Press re-issue of that book, and I was 
  14. astonished at how prescient McLuhan was. Much
